EvoSwitch is the preferred IT gateway to collocation services to customers from all over the world. Recently we welcomed Huawei Technologies as a new customer to our AMS1 data center in the Amsterdam region.

Huawei’s products and solutions have been deployed in over 100 countries and have served 45 of the world’s top 50 telecom operators, as well as one third of the world’s population. We sat down with Paul Broekhuizen, Sales Director at Huawei Technologies Europe, to find out why Huawei chose EvoSwitch, and how they leverage carrier-neutral and multi-tenant data center solutions as a building block in their own solutions portfolio.
Could you tell us something about Huawei and its product service portfolio?
“We provide independent, controllable IT infrastructure with high security and reliability, such as servers, storage devices, networks, security systems, and cloud computing, to ensure the security of policing of data sharing, service synergy and provide reliable services.” says Paul Broekhuizen. “Huawei is the only vendor that provides an end-to-end cloud DC solution, covering servers (entry-level, mid-range, and high-level), storage systems, network devices, and security devices. It also includes the Huawei-developed virtualization platform and converged management of a cloud DC.” Could you describe Huawei’s selection process for
EvoSwitch and why Huawei decided to collocate at EvoSwitch?
Huawei has a very strict selection process for its partners with whom we work together in building solutions for our customers. EvoSwitch’s strong focus on sustainability and renewable energy sources, their flexibility in providing us the space and 24×7 support we require are but some of the reasons that drew us to EvoSwitch. As we are already actively serving customers out of the AMS1 data center, we have the first proof in hand that we made the right choice.
What type of customers will you serve from EvoSwitch’s data center?
“At our core, we are a hardware vendor, that builds solutions out of our own range of products. In some cases though, our customers ask of us to manage the designed solution. We rely on our partners to bring the specific parts together we do not have in-home as a service. EvoSwitch’s AMS1 data center is key, because it is where we build and our partners manage these bespoke solutions for our customers.”
What are Huawei’s primary goals for 2014 in working with EvoSwitch?
“We’re looking to expand the relationship with our current partners and move end users on request from their private environment into the EvoSwitch AMS1 data center. We’re also focused on providing Disaster Recovery environments for our customers. At the same time, we are growing our relationships with European hosting providers to help them build cloud environments based on OpenStack.”
What is your long-term data center strategy? “We see the following major trends in the future of the corporate data center: We see increased demand for what we refer to as Virtualized Elastic Resources, the continued move to virtualize servers and the beginnings of private cloud environments and away from SANs. We see being low-carbon and energy efficient more and more as a hard requirement for our hardware that goes into the data center. We expect that Intelligent Unified Management and Control will become a hot topic, as IT infrastructure will grow to support growing sets of data across various systems and more and more public or hybrid clouds. To close, we see that the growing need and demand for standards-compliant security will make it more difficult for Enterprise customers to maintain their data centers in-home in some cases. This will create a shift towards the neutral, multi-tenant data centers that have been built around strict certifications and standards.”
Amsterdam, 28 March 2014 – EvoSwitch, a leading international provider of carrier-neutral co-location and connectivity services with data centers in Europe and the United States, has just signed a 3-year contract with energy supplier Nuon for the supply of green power including wind power. The wind power is generated at Nuon’s wind farm in Enkhuizen and will be used to power EvoSwitch’ co-location services on the Dutch market.
Ever since opening its first data center in Haarlem in 2007, EvoSwitch has been using energy-efficient technologies and 100% green power to deliver its colocation services. The Nuon contract will act to render the source of the wind power ’tangible’. Just for EvoSwitch, a large board has been put up at Nuon’s Enkhuizen wind farm stating that Nuon is supplying EvoSwitch with 100% sustainable green wind power.
The colocation service provider specifically opted for wind power as it is the cleanest form of green energy, for which the Dutch government has set out a generating quota in its multi-year energy generation plan up to 2020.
Also, research by the Dutch development organization Hivos shows that EvoSwitch holds a shared first place in the field of sustainable data center operations in the Netherlands. EvoSwitch’s AMS1 data center is the first data center in the Netherlands to consume 100% green energy and is 100% carbon neutral.
Green power becomes tangible
Previously, EvoSwitch used green power from a different Dutch supplier. The wind power that is now being supplied by Nuon is more tangible to EvoSwitch’s customers.
“As a provider of data center services, we have always made substantial investments in innovative and green technologies in support of energy-efficient data centre solutions,” explains Evoswitch’s Managing Director Eric Boonstra. “Switching to wind power shows that we are eager to continue our innovation drive in the area of power supply too. For our colocation customers, the green and sustainable nature of their IT infrastructure is suddenly made very tangible. They can go out to Enkhuizen, touch Nuon’s wind turbines and actually see the rotating blades of the turbines that power their IT environment with green current.”
“I believe a major international data center company such as EvoSwitch switching to wind power sends out an encouraging message to the market,” Nuon Energy N.V.’s CEO Peter Smink goes on to add. “It is widely known that IT infrastructures consume a comparatively large amount of energy. EvoSwitch is significantly retrenching the negative impact of its power consumption on carbon dioxide emission levels. First and foremost by going all-out for green power, but now equally by opting for the cleanest form of green energy to boot.”
Customer-individual wind power
Initially, wind power will be committed to supply part of EvoSwitch’s power needs. For a different portion, we will continue to use a mix of different forms of green power, all of which are supplied by Nuon.
“By making volume purchases and concluding long-term forward contracts for the supply of power, we have consistently managed to keep the cost of green power at a stable and highly competitive level over the years,” says Boonstra. “This also applies to wind power, even though at the present time wind power continues to remain slightly higher priced than other types of green power. Market prices for wind power are expected to gradually fall courtesy of new technologies and increased output volumes. Which is why we are adopting a phased approach to making the switch to wind power whereby we intend to gradually make this ultimate form of green energy available to our customers. Including at our data centre sites set to be opened in The Netherlands in times to come.”
EvoSwitch customers who are keen to switch to wind power in full right away are enabled to do so. Boonstra: “Via Nuon the IT infrastructures of individual customers can be powered for the full 100 per cent by wind power generated in The Netherlands.
This is an option we are happy to provide. If there is an unexpectedly big demand for this, this means that we can switch to wind power at an accelerated pace and that we are able to step up the proportion of wind in the total energy mix.”
Green Fan scheme
The use of wind power is not only tangible for the colocation customers of EvoSwitch. The energy efficiency and the green aspect can also be made tangible for customers who indirectly use these ‘green’ IT infrastructures. To this end, EvoSwitch has put in place the Green Fan scheme, which involves a variety of marketing tools enabling EvoSwitch users to formally demonstrate that their IT infrastructure runs on an energy-efficient and green server park.
“Carrying the Green Fan logo is not green washing. It enables customers to make a serious sustainable statement,” Boonstra contends. “Above all else, users carrying the logo in their communications show that their IT infrastructure is made to run in an environment that has one of the lowest Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) values on the market, which is another way of saying that it is highly energy-efficient. That is in addition to the fact that all of the power we are using is also 100% green power.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping hopes that The Netherlands will continue to lead the way in the relations between China and the European Union. He made the comment at a state banquet hosted by King Willem-Alexander at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. “Relations with Europe rank highly on our diplomatic agenda”, Xi said, who views The Netherlands as a gateway. “This is why I decided to start my journey to open the doors to Europe right here.”
King Willem-Alexander said he was “particularly delighted” to welcome Xi. He referred to the Burgerzaal (Citizen’s Hall) inside Amsterdam’s former town hall, which was the setting for the banquet, as ‘The Great Hall of the People’, in reference to the eponymous Hall in Peking. At the time the town hall was built, The Netherlands was already fascinated with China, a fascination which the King affirmed continues to exist to this very day. “The world needs China”, the King spoke. “Last year you called on the people of China to be unafraid to dream, to make their dreams come true and to lend the nation new strength together. The Kingdom of The Netherlands, viewed by some people in your country as the kingdom of innovation, is happy to contribute to the accomplishment of these dreams!”
Willem-Alexander and the Chinese President will meet again tomorrow morning at a Dutch-Chinese business forum in Noordwijk and at a meeting inside the Keukenhof. On Sunday, the President will also meet Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

EvoSwitch USA has received Data Center Technical Standards certification for its WDC1 data center in Manassas, VA. The certification is awarded by the Open-IX Association, an Internet community-derived effort to improve the landscape of Internet peering and interconnection in the United States.
“We are very pleased to receive recognition from Open-IX for our data center operations in Virginia,” said Eric Boonstra, EvoSwitch USA President. “Not just for meeting the strict technical standards, but also for our approach to neutral interconnection and willingness to partner with outside, neutral and distributed Internet Exchanges like we do with LINX NoVA here in Virginia. We were the first data center operator to introduce the European ‘style’ Inter Exchange (IX)in the USA and to announce our partnership with LINX NoVA,. We firmly believe that for our customers to have choice, we cannot tie them to interconnection services only available in our data centers. We are already seeing increased demand for colocation services since LINX NoVA went live inside our facility.”
Open-IX encourages the development of neutral and distributed Internet Exchanges in North America while promoting uniform, cost-efficient standards of performance for interconnections backed by the Internet community. The association aims to promote common and uniform specifications for data transfer and physical connectivity and improve IX performance by developing criteria and methods of measurement to reduce the complexity that restricts interconnection in fragmented markets.
“EvoSwitch USA joins an elite and growing list of DC OIX-2 data centers in the Northern Virginia Market,” comments Barry Tishgart, Board Member of the Open-IX Association. “Certification is achieved through a thorough peer-reviewed process, we welcome EvoSwitch USA to the Open-IX standards.”
Open-IX created the Data Center Technical Standards to establish a recommended standard for Data Centers to support an Internet Exchange (as defined by the Open-IX IXP Technical Standards). The standard also provides guidance for acceptable exceptions for pre-existing facilities.
As a data center server provider, innovation in energy management is a key distinguisher. Reducing energy consumption is a main driver not only from a corporate responsibility point of view, but also from a competitive angle. The modular data center design at EvoSwitch has proven to be a true winner when we look at reduction of energy consumption. The main contributor is the reduction of power that is required for the adiabatic cooling system in use.
Besides the technical innovation on the cooling units, tight management of capacity and load distribution helps to bring down the PUE values even further. Optimizing the load per data center module quickly brings down the load to a required optimum for our cooling systems. To achieve this, daily monitoring and analyzing is vital.
We are aware that data center providers consume a lot of energy. Therefore, it is also essential to look at the type of energy that we are using. The power requirement at EvoSwitch is catered by sustainable resources based on hydroelectric power and wind energy. Certificates by our electricity supplier guarantee that electricity is generated from renewable sources, thus reducing our carbon footprint.
As the demand for power from data centers will continue to grow, we at EvoSwitch strongly feel it is our responsibility to focus on energy management and innovation. The fact that we have done so for the last 7 years provides us with a great competitive edge. The more energy efficient we are, the less we impact our environment, and the less our customers pay for their energy bills–creating way for a win-win situation for all.
We met Steve Pit, COO at Voiceworks (one of EvoSwitch’s many telecom service provider customers), to discuss the services Voiceworks provides, and the role EvoSwitch plays in the delivery of their service portfolio. We also discussed Voiceworks’ future growth plans. Steve joined Voiceworks in 2012 after having spent more than five years at Easynet in various international roles in customer operations.

Thanks. Voiceworks, active since 2005, is a leader in innovation when it comes to the development of integrated fixed, mobile, and web-based communications. Voiceworks is, in the Netherlands, the only provider with an in-house developed web-based communications suite, VoIP cloud offering, and full MVNO mobile network–all integrated into one solution. This enables our customers to communicate in new, innovative, yet reliable ways.
What type of customers do you typically serve?
Our customers are typically SMEs for our fixed telephony services. But the Fixed Mobile Convergence attracts more larger corporate accounts. Even working over multiple sites or away from their desks or offices, people can be easily reached.
Last summer we announced Voiceworks Reach, which gives full control to the end user with multiple phone numbers on a single mobile device. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a trend that sees employees juggle multiple devices. Voiceworks Reach allows them to use their work and private mobile numbers and one fixed number on one mobile device and program how each number is used for outgoing calls, as well as route incoming calls and messages.”
Tell us about the infrastructure you have in place to support your service portfolio.
We run our own network from our own cloud, which we built across four data centers in the Netherlands. EvoSwitch plays an important part in our network; we interconnect our network from AMS1 with other telecom operators.”
Why did Voiceworks decide to colocate at EvoSwitch?
To us, the choice of a data center is mission critical. We chose EvoSwitch because of the strong presence of network service providers, which enable us to right-size our interconnection needs. EvoSwitch’s carrier neutrality ensures that we can easily add new providers when necessary.
Apart from serving our interconnection needs, EvoSwitch also stood out for us for the cold/hot aisle concepts they use as part of their cooling techniques, and the spacious cabinets they offer as standard. What are Voiceworks’ plans for the future?

Why did you chose EvoSwitch?
In a way, the real question is, “Why did EvoSwitch choose me?” I’m that angel is borne of an interest in facilitating access for guests to the material locations that store many parts of their online selves. Practically, this entails a relatively unusual collaboration with a colocation company, allowing for an on-site reading and facilities tour. Given the unusualness of the project, and the security considerations entailed in data storage, it has been difficult to solicit even a response from most companies. EvoSwitch, however, has proved incredibly receptive to my project, in seeming recognition of the value and timeliness of generating artistic responses to the growing number of data centres.
What is your point of view on the role data centres play in modern/21st century life?
I’m that angel comprises a book and a series of sited events. I began writing the text at a moment when “the cloud” was entering colloquial use in the United States. Friends and colleagues would bandy the term about in conversation, often later confessing that they did not, in fact, understand its significance. Was it the latest metaphor for communications media – the aether of our era? Or did it denote a new structure of distribution and storage for the data parcels we call our own? In researching this term and learning about data centres, I came to realize how greatly this symbol belied the concreteness of the Internet; rather than raining bits of information on the earth, our cloud is actually tethered to various sites throughout the world.
It seems to be the condition of many ages to both imagine fictional futures and be unable to see beyond the ubiquitous technologies of their own. I cannot imagine a world beyond data centres, but only the environmental, architectural and security issues that will inform their evolution. My project’s modest contribution, then, is to call a cultural public’s attention to these sites and these issues – to remind that that the virtual is not disconnected but rather materially enmeshed in our daily lives.
